Arsenal Capture Vermaelen For ?10m

23 year old Belgian centre-half Thomas Vermaelen has signed a ?10million deal with Arsenal football club, after weeks of negotiations with his former side Ajax.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is quoted on the official club website, saying :

“Thomas is a great signing for Arsenal and we are all delighted that he is joining us. He is a solid performer with good experience of Champions League and Uefa Cup football.”

The player himself expressed his regret at leaving Ajax after eight years at the club, but added :

“I'm also looking forward to playing in the English Premier League, which for me, is the best league in the world. Also, I just want to assure the Arsenal fans that I will give everything for this club and I hope we can enjoy winning some trophies together next season.”

Stoke City Transfer Rumours

As the transfer rumour mill starts to hot up, even the normally level headed and pragmatic Tony Pulis of Stoke City seems to be getting dragged into things.

Yesterday came the unlikely rumour that Stoke were interested in signing Michael Owen. You can thank the Daily Mirror for that one.

Today, they're apparently in for West Ham's injury prone forward Dean Ashton. While this at least makes a certain amount of sense, the club have denied any interest.

And, to make it a hatrick of injury ravaged players that haven't scored in ages, the Daily Telegraph is suggesting that they want Alan Smith from Newcastle Utd.

But, the very best one is that ‘keeper Thomas Sorensen might be on his way to Bayern Munich. We salute the News of the World for that pearl.

Johnson In Bids From Chelsea and Liverpool

Chelsea FC have matched Liverpool's ?17.5million bid to prize right back Glen Johnson away from Portsmouth.

The bid was confirmed on Friday by Portsmouth chairman Peter Storrie.

Storrie is quoted as saying :

“The matter will come to a conclusion at the beginning of next week. I do not have a preference over the move, it is up to Glen.”

“The deals are almost identical so it really is down to him and what club he prefers, which one is going to pay him more money.

“Glen wants to play regularly in the Champions League, he has got himself back in the England side so I understand that. Sometimes you have to be fair to players.”

Chelsea Transfer Rumours

Well, in the wonderful world of Chelsea, there's always transfer fun and games to be had.

Firstly - and this isn't a rumour as Portsmouth chairman Peter Storrie has confirmed it - Glen Johnson has been the subject of a ?17.5million bid. Quite why Chelsea want to buy back a player they sold for a third of that a couple of seasons ago, I don't know, but it appears to be fact.

With Carlo Ancelotti now in charge, it's inevitably unimaginative journalists are going to link AC Milan players with Chelsea. Italian midfielder Gennaro Gattuso is one name that keeps cropping up, but his agent is saying he isn't going anyway.

Another name mentioned is Andrea Pirlo. He's saying he isn't interested either.

Benzema, Valencia And A Whole Lot More

Now that Alex Ferguson will be getting his hands on the thick end of ?80million, the Man Utd transfer rumour mill is going into overdrive. Oh, what joy.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has said that United have made a bid for Antonio Valencia, so we'll have to say that one is true. I can't help thinking that Whelan's announcement is to alert other clubs who might be interested though.

Lyon striker Karim Benzema is another name strongly linked with United but the French club don't seem keen to sell him.

A new one to me is a rumour connecting Roma's Mirko Vucinic with a move to United. Vucinic seems keen, saying all that “I'm-flattered-to-be-linked-with-such-a-great-club” stuff that everyone angling for a move does.

Ronaldo Signs With Real For ?80m

Cristiano Ronaldo has moved from Manchester United to Real Madrid for a fee believed to be ?80million.

New Madrid president Florentino Perez had vowed to bring the World Player of the Year to the club and has now achieved that aim.

A statement released by Manchester United confirmed the transfer :

“At the request of Cristiano - who has again expressed his desire to leave - and after discussion with the player's representatives, United have agreed to give Real Madrid permission to talk to the player.

“Matters are expected to be concluded by 30 June. The club will not comment until further notice.”

While personal terms are yet to be agreed between the player and Real, Ronaldo himself commented:

“It's flattering when two of the top teams in the world want you to play for them.

“Now I can look forward to Real Madrid and a new stage in my career. I learned of the deal here in LA and heard from my people that United had accepted.”
