Gareth Barry has moved from Aston Villa to Manchester City for a fee believed to be around ?12million.
The 28 year old midfielder and England international was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool last summer before opting to stay with Aston Villa.
The move to Manchester City has stunned Villa supporters, but City manager Mark Hughes is pleased with his new acquisition.
Hughes is quoted on the official Manchester City website saying:
“Gareth is widely acknowledged as one of the top midfielders in the Premier League.”
“The experience required to compete with the best in the Premier League is vital, and with Gareth we get the experience of someone who has played week-in, week-out in the hardest league in the world.
“I like players that have the sort of flexibility that enables you to change your tactics if you need during a game, and Gareth has that.”
Barry himself has written an open letter to Aston Villa fans explaining the reasons for the move, saying that “a massive fear of going stale and falling into a comfort zone” was at the heart of his decision to leave Villa Park.
