Portsmouth Warned Over Takeover

The much delayed takeover of Portsmouth FC by Middle Eastern businessman Dr Sulaiman Al Fahim has hit another potential snag.

Rumours that ex-Manchester City chairman Dr Thaksin Shinawatra is involved as a shareholder have led Premier League boss Dave Richards to state categorically that “If Dr Thaksin was involved, the takeover will not be allowed to go through.”

Richards added :

“The Premier League have met the advisors to Dr Sulaiman this week and we have made it very clear that we want to know who are the shareholders in the possible takeover of Portsmouth.”

Shinawatra, who has been convicted of corruption in his native Thailand, has had his British visa withdrawn and would fail a ‘fit and proper person' test under the new guidelines.

Portsmouth FC have released a statement denying any involvement with Shinawatra. The statement read :

“Neither Thaksin Shinawatra, nor his advisor Pairoj Piempongsant are involved in funding Dr Sulaiman al Fahim's bid for the club.”

“A representative for Dr Sulaiman al Fahim met with Premier League officials last week and confirmed that he is the sole purchaser of the football club and this will be verified by his lawyers.”
