Man Utd defender Nemanja Vidic will miss the Community Shield with a calf injury, while new Chelsea signing Yuri Zhirkov is missing with a knee problem.
Vidic will also miss the opening match of the Premiership season.
Also out for United are goalkeeper Edwin van Der Sar, right back Gary Neville and fellow defender Wes Brown.
It looks likely that Ben Foster will replace van Der Sar for the Community Shield, with Rafael and Johnny Evans deputising for Neville and Vidic respectively.
Dimitar Berbatov is set to partner Wayne Rooney in attack, with Michael Owen on the bench.
For Chelsea, Zhirkov's injury means Michael Ballack is in contention after recovering from a fractured toe, although Florent Malouda looks a more likely option on the left of midfield.
New Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti is likely to choose a 4-1-2-1-2 ‘diamond' formation with Frank Lampard playing just behind a front two of Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba.
