Two men have been arrested after West Ham defender Calum Davenport and his mother were stabbed in an attack that happened early on Saturday morning.
Davenport, 26, was stabbed in both legs and underwent emergency surgery at Bedford Hospital, which also treated his mother.
While the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, a spokesman for the hospital described his condition as “serious”.
A statement released by West Ham United read :
“His mum is recovering while Calum underwent surgery this morning and his injuries were described as serious by doctors.
“The club's medical team are in contact with hospital staff.
“The thoughts of everyone at West Ham are with Calum and his family.”
Bedford police confirmed that a 19 year old man was arrested shortly after the incident and that another, 25 year old man had been arrested in Derby on a charge of attempted murder.
