Michael Owen is missing for Manchester United with a groin strain, while Sunderland are hoping central midfielder Lee Cattermole will have recovered from an ankle problem.
Cattermole was substituted at half time during Sunderland's 5-2 win over Wolves, but Black Cats manager Steve Bruce is hopeful the player will be fit enough to start.
Also rated doubtful for Sunderland is fellow summer signing John Mensah. The defender sustained a thigh injury in midweek and is 50/50 to play Manchester United.
Utd boss Sir Alex Ferguson will restore Ben Foster to goalkeeping duties after the England international was rested for the Carling Cup.
Ferguson may refreshen up the United midfield, depending on the fitness of Ji-Sung Park. Park missed the midweek Champions League match with a virus, but may start in place of Nani if fit.
Veterans Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs look set to keep their places in the starting eleven.
Still not fully fit are Edwin van der Sar and Rafael Da Silva, although the duo are back in training.
