David James returns from a calf injury for Portsmouth, while Sunderland have a number of defensive injuries to contend with.
Most serious for Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is that left back George McCartney is rated doubtful with a hamstring strain.
With fellow full backs Kieran Richardson and Phil Bardsley both suspended and injuries to Anton Ferdinand and John Mensah, Sunderland find themselves very short at the back for this match.
Nyron Nosworthy may be pressed into service as a makeshift fullback.
Also out are midfielders Bolo Zenden and Lee Cattermole.
Kenwyne Jones and Darren Bent will again start upfront for Steve Bruce's side.
Portsmouth manager Avram Grant will bring goalkeeper David James back in to the starting line up in place of Asmir Begovic.
Also in line for a start is midfielder Papa Bouba Diop, who has overcome the hamstring strain that has troubled him since August. Michael Brown could be the man to make way.
Younes Kaboul will start at centre half after missing the victory over Burnley through suspension.
